Abstract
The stability of stationary envelope waves (one- and two-dimensional cases) has been analyzed based on a perturbation method similar to that of Schmidt. The cylindrically symmetric envelope wave is found to be stable to an -state perturbation with a negative dispersion in a cubically nonlinear medium. However, the envelope wave is unstable to a -state perturbation under the same conditions.
