Use of routine data in studies of point sources of environmental pollution

Abstract
This chapter discusses how the rapid initial investigation of health around sources of industrial pollution can be automated using routine data. The establishment of such as routine data system is the UK is described. The system was implemented in the Small Area Health Statistics Unit at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and in the Environmental Monitoring Project at the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys. The system automatically assembles and displays data around any point, compares the observed number of cases with those expected from national or regional states, and takes account of the socio-economic distribution of areas around the point of interest.
