Abstract
The midrib (principal member of the vein system of the leaf) differentiates during apical growth of the leaf primordium. Marginal, and then secondary, veins are next formed. Secondary veins are of two sorts, namely normal and canal secondaries, which alternate with one another. They extend from midrib to marginal veins and run parallel to each other though some variation occurs. Procambial histogenesis of marginal, secondary, and tertiary veins and of vein endings is described. Mention is made of relevance of this work to the phylogeny of leaf venation.
