Abstract
The first experimental results for the low-lying core-excited quartet levels in Mg II have been obtained using the beam-foil excitation technique. On the basis of wavelength and lifetime measurements, the structure of the quartet-level scheme has been established, involving levels belonging to the 2p53s3p, 3p2, 3s3d, and 3s4s configurations. The experimental data are discussed in relation to recent multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock calculations, including Breit-Pauli relativistic corrections. Keywords
