Abstract
The validity of comparing well defined series of cases is presented. The Columbia Clinical Classification was best for clear definition based on pre-operative findings. It was reviewed in detail and the results of its use in different places charted. Haagensen''s operation was compared to the treatment of carcinoma of the breast at the University of Michigan. At Ann Arbor radical mastectomy is closer to Meyer''s technic than to Halsted''s and Is supplemented in medially and centrally located tumors and those with metastases by postoperative Co radiation therapy. Haagensen follows the Halsted technic and does not use postoperative irradiation. In cases without apparent metastases the results of the 2 methods are the same, Le. 91% 5-yr. survival. In cases with axillary metastases Haagensen''s series was 5% better than that of the University of Michigan. It is apparent that the Co irradiation in Ann Arbor following their type of radical mastectomy did not improve their results to those of Haagensen''s operation alone. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
