Abstract
Combining open channel flow in rectangular channels of equal width is considered for transitions from sub‐ to supercritical flow. The upstream water level is determined by a one‐dimensional approach. Using appropriate observations, the solution is checked with experimental data and modifications proposed. It is shown that transitional flow can only exist if the lateral discharge is at least 15% of the total discharge. Furthermore, detailed measurements of the velocity field are presented. Finally, recommendations are given which allow a straightforward hydraulic design. Keywords
