Abstract
During narcosis there is a loss of cellular Ca and liquefaction of the cortical gel. Alterations of Ca balance were produced in male guppies (Lebistes reticulatus) by placing them in Ca-free solutions, or by the addition of sodium citrate or ethylenediamine tetra-acetate (EDTA). Pentobarbital was used to induce narcosis. Induction time was shortened when chelating agents were given simultaneously with pentobarbital. EDTA had the greatest effect in shortening induction time and prolonging recovery time, even when balanced with Ca. When fish were pretreated to remove Ca the induction time was prolonged. Additional observations are made regarding the role of Ca in narcosis. Keywords
