Numerous examples of fishes "leapfrogging" or "somersault leapfrogging" over floating objects are cited from accounts by naturalists and others. Strongylura spp., Clupea harengus, Atherina spp., Menidia notata, and Hemiramphus spp. are some of the fishes in which this habit has been observed. Since the "leapfrogging" is probably not due to an effort on the part of the fish to scrape off parasites, it provides an interesting comparison with the play habits of higher organisms. More detailed accounts of "leapfrogging," especially with motion picture records, would be valuable.
