Presumptive Identification of Bacteria from Blood Cultures in Four Hours

Abstract
By use of large inocula from positive blood cultures in the performance of a series of bacteriologic tests, it was possible to identify correctly 112 out of 114 isolates in 4 hr or less. Presumptive identification by this procedure is suitable for the majority of rapidly growing bacteria encountered in blood-borne infections and can provide clinically useful information within a short period of time. The techniques are readily adaptable to any diagnostic microbiology laboratory.
