Abstract
The lecture describes solar flare effects in the chromosphere and photosphere, particularly emphasizing problems of the energy transfer, and the differences between thermal and non-thermal phases of the flare development. Filamentary and shell models are compared and the depth of the white-light flare emission is discussed. Optical effects possibly associated with other, non-optical flare-associated phenomena are pointed out. Keywords
