THE ASSOCIATION OF A GENE FOR CHLOROPHYLL PRODUCTION WITH A SPECIFIC CHROMOSOME IN AVENA SATIVA

Abstract
Albinism in an advanced hybrid of Avena sativa L. was shown to result from the loss of a whole chromosome pair. Monosomic and disomic plants were green. The chromosome which carries a gene for chlorophyll production was identified as the shortest in the complement and it is also characterized by a sub-terminal centromere. This chromosome is a member of the C or D genome. In monosomic plants, meiotic studies showed that the univalent always divides at anaphase I and that in the tetrads only 16.8 per cent of pollen grains have all 21 chromosomes. The deficient pollen grains competed quite successfully in fertilization resulting in a high frequency of nullisomic plants (63.9 per cent) in the progeny of selfed monosomics.
