Management of Cabbage Caterpillars in Florida and Georgia by Using Visual Damage Thresbolds1

Abstract
Cabbage was sprayed with permethrin according to 3 pest management schedules and 5 visual damage thresholds. When damage to cabbage was assessed throughout the growth cycle by using a threshold of 1–2 holes/plant, there were reductions of 4–12 sprays from a fixed weekly or 2x weekly spray schedule but no significant losses in % marketable heads. The use of a visual threshold of 1–2 holes/plant was as effective as larval counts for making treatment decisions and was less time consuming. Caterpillar damage before head leaves formed had no significant effect on production of marketable plants.
