Abstract
The consistent averaging approximation for the hydrodynamic interaction, which has been introduced very recently, is used to derive a retarded-motion expansion for Rouse dumbbells in slowly varying homogeneous flows. In the special case of shear flow, expansions for the viscometric functions are obtained for small and high shear rates. The effects of the consistently averaged hydrodynamic interaction are shown to be in reasonable agreement with experiment. Keywords
