Abstract
To the Editor: The article, "Phasing Out State Hospitals — a Psychiatric Dilemma," by Becker and Schulberg, in the January 29 issue of the Journal, is a timely and thoughtful review of the problems inherent in deinstitutionalization programs in mental health. We strongly agree with the authors' statement of "the necessity of linking hospital phase-outs to expanded community-based care"; their assessment that for most patients, "community-based care...can replace services provided in State hospitals" also appears sound. We disagree, however, with their implication that community programs can be and should be expanded to the point at which the need . . .
