The Production of Spores by Penicillium notatum

Abstract
Counts were made of spores suspended in 0.1% calsolene oil in water. High yields of spores were obtained on media containing carbohydrate, ammonia, and an organic acid such as citric, tartaric, or succinic. Media optimal for sporulation were similar to those which are good for the production of penicillin, but the choice of organic acids is less restricted. Within certain limits the number of spores produced varied with the volume of medium, not with the surface area. The production of spores appeared to be limited by the accumulation of toxic substances in the medium.
