Abstract
Dielectric constant, ε, density, and near-infrared spectra of a series of solutions of graded concentration of n-alcohols in benzene and dioxan have been determined. Apparent dipole moments of the solutes have been calculated and solute polarisation, P2, evaluated as a function of alcohol weight fraction, w. In benzene, over the concentration range reported, no low frequency band assigned to high polymers was observed. Positive deviations of ε and P2 from linear dependence with w are attributed to the presence of linear dimers and trimers. For dioxan solutions ε and P2 plot linearly against w over the complete concentration range and the single broad band in the spectra at about 3500 cm.–1 is attributed to hydrogen bonding between alcohol and dioxan molecules.
