Abstract
The absorption spectra of hexavalent uranium in LiF have been measured at 4.2 and 77 K. The fluorescence spectra have been obtained with excitation by an argon ion laser operating at eight wavelengths. Selective excitation of different uranium–oxygen complexes is observed, as well as polarized fluorescence following excitation with the polarized laser radiation. A distinctive feature of the fluorescence spectrum is the occurrence of pairs of associated lines. The short wavelength line in each pair is an electric dipole line which vanishes in fluorescence at 4.2 K. The long wavelength line in each pair is a magnetic dipole line which is enhanced in intensity at 4.2 K. The fluorescent half‐lives have been measured at 4.2 and 77 K and interpreted in terms of a pair of excited levels for each type of complex. Keywords
