To the Editor.— Among the relatively large variety of primary skin tumors that may arise in the subungual region, basal cell epithelioma has not been previously described. In a written communication (May 1972), E. B. Helwig stated that he was unaware of the occurrence of this lesion in the nail bed. We have recently had the opportunity of observing such a lesion in this location, which appeared to develop after a prolonged period of treatment for a chronic subungual infection. Report of a Case A 51-year-old man first developed a "hangnail" of the fourth finger in 1953, which was treated by partial excision of Residual tumor 3 mm in size from ulnar border of ungual skin graft. the nail and topically applied ointments. During the following 19 years, a chronic granulating infection was present in this nail bed of the finger, which was treated on several occasions by partial nail
