Abstract
The author shows how to write an exact cavity‐mode expansion and obtains formally simple yet exact equations of motion for real laser cavities with large output coupling and/or diffraction losses, using the actual transverse eigenmodes of the cavity as a basis set, and including fast transient variations, externally injected signals, and spontaneous emission noise. Keywords
