Abstract
The fluorescence of protoporphyrin in tissue fades rapidly, in contrast to uroporphyrin or coproporphyrin, when examined by the conventional mercury vapor (UV) fluorescence microscope. An iodine tungsten quartz lamp used in place of the mercury vapor lamp permits less rapid fading of protoporphyrin fluorescence. Microphotographs of the fluorescence in erythrocytes and liver (containing predominantly protoporphyrin) from patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria have been demonstrated for the first time; and provides an additional method for the study of this condition or other similar forms of porphyria such as lead poisoning.Keywords
