Abstract
The phylogenetic relationships among 4 species in the Aedes (Stegomyia) scutellaris group—Aedes malayensis, Ae. alcasidi, Ae. polynesiensis, and Ae. kesseli—were examined using 5 strains from laboratory colonies and 1 strain obtained from the field in 1979. Certain of these strains were also used in hybridization tests to determine how accurately electrophoretic similarities reflected the relationships suggested by mating compatibility. The 2 methods of measuring genetic relatedness yielded similar patterns and both reflected well the systematics of the group as derived from morphological comparisons. Moreover, isozyme differences at 7 loci, including α-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, adenylate kinase, and the 4 loci of hexokinases, separated the strains into 2 groups that also differed in their ability to serve as vectors of filariasis. This publication has 4 references indexed in Scilit:
