Abstract
Hormonal stimulation of sex‐specific volatiles in bark beetlesExposure of bark beetles to synthetic juvenile hormone analogues stimulates biosynthesis of pheromones. This technique is well suited where production of crude material presents a problem for the isolation and chemical characterization of beetle produced volatiles. The procedure is considerable less time consuming than conventional methods and provides extracts less contaminated with host plant volatiles.Zusammenfassung: Die dargestellte Methode zur Stimulation der Duffstoffsynthese in Borkenkäfern erlaubt die Massenproduktion käfereigener Duftstoffe, wie sie für die chemische Strukturaufklärung erforderlich ist. Das Verfahren schließt Verluste an Käfermaterial weitgehend aus, es spart Zeit und liefert sauberes Ausgangsmaterial für die chemische Analyse.Daneben dürften diese Beobachtungen auch für das theoretische Verständnis der Pheromonphysiologie bei Käfern von Interesse sein.
