Abstract
The principles of interference refractometry have been described with special reference to determination of the concentration of anaesthetic agents in gas mixtures. Two commercially available portable direct-reading instruments have been adapted for use in anaesthetic practice: zero and calibration remained stable for long periods. Determination of the composition of a wide range of anaesthetic gas mixtures was found to be simple, rapid and sufficiently accurate for clinical and many laboratory purposes. Keywords
