EVALUATIONS OF SAFETY PACKAGING FOR THE PROTECTION OF CHILDREN

Abstract
The use of a crossover approach in which each of a group of packages is tested in each subject in randomized sequence has been found to give highly satisfactory evaluations of safety packagings, when data are analyzed properly, using limited numbers of children. The method is described as a model for the evaluation of safety packaging in the prevention of childhood poisoning. Its use showed the limited effectiveness of snap-type "safety caps," the significant retardant value of unit packaging, and the effectiveness of press-release types of closures in denying access of young children to the contents.
