Abstract
Data from “confusion” assessments in Homes for old people are examined from a labeling viewpoint. 457 residents in 11 Homes were tested and rated to determine their levels of mental confusion. Intercorrelations of the results indicate that the Matrons' overall rating (a) are significantly associated with the test scores, and (b) correlate more significantly with aspects of verbal confusion and spatial disorientation, Implications regarding staff stereotyping and staff power over patient populations suggest innovations in staff development and approaches to patients' rights.
