Abstract
The reasons why high-energy particle accelerators are needed for sub-nuclear physics are briefly given, followed by a short history of the development of the different types of accelerators, describing their basic principles. The main accelerators and storage rings in service today are described, and the parameters of those under construction or projected are given. Finally, the physical factors limiting the performance of the various types of accelerator are discussed, together with proposals for overcoming them by the application of new techniques. Keywords
