Abstract
Academic geographer/cartographers are responsible for the cartography training of geographers, cartographers, and the educated public. A questionnaire was mailed to a sample of faculty geographer/cartographers in the United States. It queried aspects of cartography training, work experience, and professional activity. Sixty-three individuals returned the questionnaire. The publication productivity of respondents was examined independently. The survey revealed that while almost all respondents were actively engaged in cartography teaching, the amount of previous course work, work experience, and professional activity associated with cartography varied widely. Based on this examination of the data, three types of geographer/cartographers are hypothesized: the noncartographer, the teaching cartographer, and the academic cartographer.
