Abstract
Following voluntary ambulatory turning (8 turns), perceived motion was reversed in direction relative to aftereffects of passive rotation and predictions from current concepts of inner ear function. Following active turning, feedback from reflexes elicited by vestibulospinal activity apparently dominated the perceptual experience. The mechanisms involved in this antisomatogyral illusion would be operative frequently in vertiginous episodes of patients, and they may also be involved in the active control of vehicles, such as aircraft and flight simulators.
