The Vegetation of St Kilda in 1948

Abstract
An account is given of certain aspects of the vegetation of St. Kilda. In particular, the changes which have taken place in the last 17 yrs. have been studied. These are mainly due to the evacuation of the human inhabitants and to variation in other biotic factors. The 3 primary commun-ities[long dash]heath-moorland, Agrostis-Festuca, and maritime grasslands[long dash]may all show modifications due to disturbance and manuring. Various states of this modified vegetation are described and a possible relationship between them deduced. An interesting field is open for study in the relationships between puffins and vegetation.
