Abstract
Indium(III) forms complexes of the type InL2 [L = 1,2-dicyanoethylene-1,2-dithiolate (A) or toluene-3,4-dithiolate anions] which readily yield 1:1 adducts with bidentate donors such as 1,10-phenanthroline. Salts of the six-co-ordinate [In(A)3]3– anion can also be prepared. The ligand 1,1-dicyanoethylene-2,2-dithiolate gives [In(L2)X]2– anions, (X = Cl, Br, or I); neutral bidentate donors again give 1:1 adducts. Polarographic reduction steps, formally InIII→ InII→ InI→ In0, has been observed for many of these compounds. The structures, discussed on the basis of i.r. evidence, are compared with those of related compounds.
