The Distribution and Spread ofMyxobolus Cerebralisin the United States

Abstract
Myxobolus cerebralis, the causative agent of salmonid whirling disease, was first found in the United States in Pennsylvania in 1956, and has since spread to most regions of the country having self-sustaining trout populations. By fall 1996, 21 states had reported the presence of M. cerebralis. How far the organism will spread is not known.
