Abstract
An instrument to measure patient O2 consumption simply and accurately was built using a replenishment technique. O2 is added to the patient''s exhaled gas until its O2 concentration is the same as the O2 concentration of the inhaled gas. The rate at which O2 is added is a measure of the patient''s O2 consumption. Bench tests show that O2 consumption is measured with an accuracy of .+-. 2.3% and human tests show an accuracy of .+-. 5.9%. The instrument interfaces easily with a mechanical ventilator and is readily accepted by the clinician.
