Abstract
Tracheal fluids were collected at cesarian section with intact placental circulation from 7 non-breathing, full-term lambs. The fluid was higher in sodium and chloride content but lower in potassium, protein, sugar and urea and less viscous than the amniotic fluid. Chemical composition of the tracheal fluid was similar to the fetal blood. It is postulated that the fetal tracheal fluid arises from the fetal lower respiratory tract, but it is not known whether it is derived from the fetal blood as an ultrafiltrate or represents a glandular secretion. Keywords
