Abstract
We present experimental evidence that the structural transformation observed in Sn is first order, as predicted by theories which invoke a band Jahn-Teller mechanism for the lattice instability. The magnitude of the spontaneous lattice distortion at the transition temperature is in excellent agreement with the theory.
