Abstract
Laboratory results indicated that the insecticides aldicarb, carbofuran, chlorpyrifos, and FMC-33297 (3-phenoxybenzyl (±) -cis, trans-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylate), and the chitin synthesis inhibitors TH 6038 [1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(2,6-dichlorobenzoyl)-urea] and TH 6040 [1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(2,6-difluorobenzoyl)-urea] would control Hylemya platura (Meigen). In field tests, however, TH 6038 and TH 6040 failed to protect sprouting lima beans from seedcorn maggot damage. On the other hand, seed treatments with diazinon, chlorpyrifos or FMC-33297 and seed furrow applications of carbofuran effectively controlled H. platura on snap beans, although less protection was evident when the last 3 materials were used on squash and sweet corn. The toxicity of the pyrethroid, FMC-33297, was increased 86-fold in the presence of piperonyl butoxide. Keywords
