Abstract
Mature fish roe or quahaugs are good sources of bacterial accessory growth factors. A 5% fish-roe infusion or a 20% quahaug infusion, with addition of 3.1% dehydrated Difco Nutrient Agar, afforded a quick method of preparing an enriched plating medium for primary isolation of pathogens. Prolonged storage of these media in special glass vials which prevented loss of moisture did not affect their bacterial growth-promoting quality. By substituting aqueous infusions of either quahaug or mature fish roe for veal infusion in Brown''s standard medium, identification of alpha or beta streptococci could be had within 24 hrs., without storage in an icebox.
