Abstract
Two laboratory models of a single-sideband modulator are described. The frequency of a microwave signal is shifted by means of a rotating magnetic field transverse to a ferrite differential half-wave section. The first laboratory model, a transmission device, is inserted in a waveguide-transmission line. The second model, which is a reflection device, reflects signals from a source. Either modulator shifts the microwave-carrier frequency of 9,375 mc by plus or minus 20 kc. Differential half-wave sections are shown to be possible from Polder's explanation of double refraction of plane electromagnetic waves propagated in an infinitely large ferromagnetic medium magnetized transverse to the direction of propagation. Keywords
