Abstract
Surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cells with bookshelf geometry and with chevron geometry are considered. If the director azimuth ϕ is considered as uniform throughout the cell (or througout each chevron half), then the transmission of normally incident light can be calculated analytically. E.g. for bookshelf cells with an optimal tilt angle θ (θ = π/8), the light transmission τ is a simple rational function of x = cos ϕ, however with irrational coefficients: In the case of oblique light, only numerical calculations are possible. Computer conoscopies are derived by the (4×4)-matrix method. Keywords
