Abstract
Fifty-three major academic library buildings constructed since 1964 are listed and their principal characteristics compared and analysed from the point of view of the librarian. The constraints affecting library design in the period are outlined and some of the structural features of these buildings are described. Attention is paid to the general layout with emphasis on the creation of a main services floor, and details of the accommodation for readers and for materials are given. Some evaluation is made of the success of these buildings in providing an aesthetically satisfying environment for work and for study. Keywords
