Abstract
The magnetostriction of iron single crystals has been measured as a function of temperature (77°K to 900°K), magnetic field (up to 14 kOe), and magnetic field orientation. These data have been used to evaluate the magnetostriction constants for two‐ and five‐constant expressions. The high‐temperature maximum in as reported by Tatsumoto and Okamoto has been confirmed but not the low‐temperature maximum. A comparison of the five constants with the conventional magnetoelastic coupling theory revealed no correlation. The forced anisotropic magnetostriction constants have been evaluated as a function of temperature and found to be small for iron, while the volume effect was in agreement with previous results.
