Abstract
The diagnosis of coronary artery disease is frequently a difficult one. A classification of the degree or amount of coronary atherosclerosis is even more difficult. Indeed, unfortunately, the anatomic diagnosis of this disease has, so far, been the exclusive domain of the pathologist. The introduction and widespread application of coronary arteriography may very well take the precious information now only available tn a postmortem report and place it in the hands of the cardiologist, the radiologist and the surgeon. With this intent in mind, during the past 2 years, we have applied or developed 5 different techniques of coronary arteriography in a series of over 100 clinical cases. The method of diastolic injection during pharmacologically induced prolongation of the R-R interval is reported in great detail. This method, performed under local anesthesia, has proven to be safe, reliable and perfectly reproducible. The detailed knowledge of the anatomy and pathophysiology offered by this technique and its extensive application in clinical cases will afford a better selection of patients for various medical and/or surgical procedures and a reliable means of evaluating the results of the therapy applied. Keywords
