Abstract
Erythroid hypoplasia was a consistent finding in children with malnutrition (kwashiorkor and marasmus). With subsequent protein feeding, there was an increased production of normoblasts, and in most cases, erythroid hyperplasia occurred. With increased erythropoiesis, the associated deficiencies became apparent or more marked. It is postulated that the anemia of kwashiorkor is primarily due to the protein deficiency which results in a decreased production of red cell precursors. Keywords
