Abstract
Utilizing data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, a dichotomy was found in the experience of poverty in the elderly years. In the first three years of such poverty, exit probabilities were relatively high, comparable to those in the non-elderly years. After spending three elderly years in poverty, however, the probability of escaping poverty was extremely low. Elderly women had considerably less probability of escaping poverty than men. No racial differences were found. Keywords
