Abstract
Clinical and genetic aspects of the prediabetic syndrome (PDS) were presented, based on findings in more than 1400 viable children borne by more than 500 diabetic women before the onset of diabetes. PDS could not be considered a common syndrome since abnormalities generally ascribed to it such as increased rates of toxemia, prematurity or fetal mortality were absent. Fetal giantism was the only common feature. Factors associated with it were listed in the following order of decreasing importance genetic predisposition, mother''s obesity, diabetic heredity, subsequent development of maternal diabetes.
