Abstract
Alcohol exerts toxic effects on folate homeostasis through impaired intake, because of dietary deprivation or malabsorption. It also has a direct effect on internal folate metabolism which involves reversible tissue sequestration, increased polyglutamate synthesis, decreased biliary folate and a resulting reduction in serum folate levels and tissue supply. Alcoholism is associated with a number of changes in cellular metabolism which can lead to organ damage. This publication has 18 references indexed in Scilit:
