Understanding drug compliance in a psychiatric population: An application of the theory of planned behaviour

Abstract
This paper uses the Theory of Planned Behaviour to aid understanding of compliance with drug treatment for psychiatric problems using a prospective design. Compliance over a nine-week period was explained by intentions and perceived behavioural control (38.1% variance explained). Intentions to comply with the drug regimen was explained by attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control (65.0% variance explained). Beliefs about outcomes, normative pressure and control factors reliably distinguish high and low intenders and may form a useful basis for interventions to increase compliance. Implications for increasing drug compliance are discussed.
