Abstract
Illegal off-track betting in the United States is an enterprise involving staggering amounts of money. This article describes some of the more common bookmaking operations which flourish in a large midwestern metropolitan area of the United States. The routines of a sample of both "career" and part-time bookies are analyzed. Keywords
