Abstract
SUMMARY: The possible role of membrane‐bound vesicles in the uptake of ions by plant cells is discussed. Evidence of compartmentation obtained from kinetic analyses of the influx and efflux of ions is considered in conjunction with the findings of biochemical and cytochemical studies of ATP‐ase activity and localization with reference to the possible role of this enzyme in ion uptake. A model is proposed for ion uptake, an important feature of which is the formation of pinocytotic vesicles at the plasmalemma. This model also incorporates the differential pattern of uptake observed at low (system 1) and high (system 2) external concentrations. The relationship of such mechanisms to long‐distance transport of ions is considered. Keywords
