Abstract
The causes of the unacceptably high peritonitis rate in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis with the traditional connection system are investigated and identified. To overcome such a highly limiting complication, a complete revision of the connection philosophy is suggested, substituting contamination prevention with a simpler and more effective sterilization of the connection site after the connection has been made. Practical examples of chemical and thermal sterilization are illustrated. Keywords
