Autosterilizing CAPD Connection Systems

Abstract
The causes of the unacceptably high peritonitis rate in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis with the traditional connection system are investigated and identified. To overcome such a highly limiting complication, a complete revision of the connection philosophy is suggested, substituting contamination prevention with a simpler and more effective sterilization of the connection site after the connection has been made. Practical examples of chemical and thermal sterilization are illustrated.
