Abstract
A convenient method of preparing chenodeoxycholic acid (3 alpha, 7 alpha, dihydroxycholanic acid) from 3 alpha, 7-alpha-diacetoxy-12-ketocholanic acid is descr. Several esters of chenodeoxycholic acid are characterized and their infrared spectra given. Analysis of human autopsy bile specimens by chromatography and infrared spectrometry has shown that chenodeoxycholic acid is an abundant constituent, while litho-cholic acid is scarce. There is no obvious connection with age or the presence of carcinomatosis. It is still uncertain whether this finding is specific to the human sp. or is part of a common mammalian plan. Keywords
